🗣 “Go to the ant, O lazy one; Observe her ways and be wise, Which, having no chief, Overseer or ruler, She prepares her food in the summer And brings in her provisions [of food for the winter] in the harvest.” Proverbs 6:6-8 AMP
✒️ Solomon found inspiration by observing the ant. Through the example of this tiny creature, he discovered insights that can profoundly impact our lives.
Instead of consuming all of their resources, these ants invest in the future. They are not wasteful but are prudent, as they prepare their food in the summer. When they experience a Harvest, they gather their provisions. They don’t just live for the moment but think ahead. No one forces them to take these actions. They act because they instinctively know that they need to be prepared.
In contrast, Solomon observed that some people were “sluggards.” These are people who don’t act unless forced to do so. Because of their laziness, they crave many things but get nothing (Proverbs 13:4). They “refuse to work” (Proverbs 21:25).
Although sluggards tend to be wasteful, they still have a huge appetite. They love to consume the resources they have, yet they aren’t ready for the future. They don’t plan or think ahead. They don’t plough their fields or Sow Seeds when they have the opportunity.
Because they don’t Sow, they don’t Reap. They beg during the Harvest (Proverbs 20:4). As a result of their choices and lifestyles, they often are filled with fear and worry and cannot see past their immediate circumstances. Yet, they also are proud and critical of others.
If we are wise, we will be careful not to be sluggards. Instead, we will learn from ants. We will show initiative and not wait for a crisis before we act. We will not be wasteful or spend all our resources on short-term pleasures but will Sow Seeds into our future.
Thinking ahead, we will be prudent and prepared. We will pray and seek God’s direction, and we will seek first His Kingdom.
