Jealousy and Self Ambition

“Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every evil thing. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.” James 3:16-17 NASB

It is a subject that has sparked intense studies: Why did the nations of Europe allow themselves to plunge into World War I? It was a war that began on this day in 1914 when Germany declared war on Russia.

But what were the real causes?

Perhaps rising feelings of nationalism, or increased competition for empires and resources. Perhaps the growing arms race, or complicated alliances.

Yet, in a strange way this was a kind of family squabble. For many leaders actually were related. The British king (George V), Kaiser Wilhelm (leader of Germany) and Czar Nicolas II (ruler of Russia) were cousins. Other family members were spread throughout the continent.

While knowing each other well, these family members had complex rivalries. From time to time, they would gather at special occasions. Several frequently corresponded. Yet, in spite of these interrelationships, the nations led by these men were plunged into a war that claimed 8.5 million lives.

In many ways, these men were guilty of the kind of “jealousy and selfish ambition” warned about in the Bible. They could demonstrate a strong desire for control and power, and even sought to dominate other family members.

Today, many people, in many ways, are guilty of these same characteristics. The result? As the Bible promises, “disorder and every evil thing.” This disorder can lead to the breakup of friendships. Splitting churches and families.

Dividing companies and nations. They can impact your life, too.

Ask God to search your heart, that you might be freed from these corrupting influences. Seek God’s wisdom, a wisdom that is pure and peaceable. Gentle and reasonable. Full of mercy and good fruits. It never wavers, and never is guilty of hypocrisy.

Prayer Father, deliver me from jealousy and selfish ambition. Give me love for others. I humble myself before You. I seek more of Your wisdom. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
